Post Rock/Math rock definition

POST-ROCK:

The term post-rock was coined by Simon Reynolds in issue 123 of The Wire (May 1994) to describe a sort of music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and powerchords."

Originally used to describe the music of such bands as Stereolab, Disco Inferno, Seefeel, Bark Psychosis and Pram, it spread out to be frequently used for all sorts of jazz- and Krautrock-influenced, instrumental, electronica-added music made after 1994. Bands from the early 1990s such as Slint, or earlier, such as Talk Talk were influential on this genre. As with many musical genres, the term is arguably inadequate: it is used for the music of Tortoise as well as that of Mogwai, two bands who have very little in common besides the fact that their music is largely instrumental.

The aforementioned Tortoise was among the founders of the movement. After the second Tortoise LP Millions Now Living Will Never Die, the band became a post-rock icon. After Millions... many bands (e.g., Do Make Say Think) began to record, inspired by the "Tortoise-sound" and were often described as post-rock.

In the late nineties, Chicago, Illinois, became the home base of many different groups. John McEntire (of Tortoise) became an important producer for lots of them, as well as Jim O'Rourke (of Brice-Glace, Gastr del Sol and many more). Post-rock began to range from the slow, guitar-based ambience of Boxhead Ensemble to the up-tempo electronica of Stereolab.

Montreal, Quebec band Godspeed You Black Emperor! - later renamed 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor' - brought a political element with anti-globalization movement leanings.

By the early 2000s, the term had started to fall out of favor, while the major artists kept on making high quality recordings. The wide range of styles covered by the term had robbed it of its usefulness almost from the moment it was coined.

Closely related to post-rock is the genre known as Math rock, characterized by more percussive timbres, and more dissonant harmonic gestures.

MATH ROCK:

Math Rock is a genre that emerged in the late 80's and that was influenced by both the intricacies of progressive and avant-garde rock - King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Henry Cow - and 20th century composers such as Steve Reich and John Cage. The music is characterized by complex structures, angular melodies and constant abrupt changes in tempo and time signature. The name Math Rock is a term that grew out of the Chicago scene and the artists working with engineer Steve Albini in an effort to describe the new style.

The basic building blocks of Math Rock can be traced back to the late 60's and 70's where Progressive Rock artists were making more elaborate compositions than the standard rock bands and were experimenting with song structures. Early Avant-garde groups like Massacre, and artists such as Captain Beefheart and John Zorn were highly influential to Math Rock bands and traces of their music can still be heard throughout the genre. Another big influence to the Math Rock approach was Slint with their album "Spiderland" which showcased many techniques that Math Rock bands will follow in the future. Punk also had significant impact on the sound of Math Rock bands. Other notable influences are: Post-Rock, Heavy Metal, and Jazz.

Although there are Math Rock bands in different countries around the world, most reside in the United States, the Midwest in particular, and tend to be divided by regions: Pittsburgh bands (Don Caballero, Six Horse) Chicago bands (Shellac, U.S. Maple), Ohio bands (Keelhaul, Craw) Louisville bands (June 44, Rodan, The For Carnation, Crain), and San Diego bands (Drive Like Jehu, Tristeza) among others on both coasts. Japan was also an important country in the Math Rock genre with bands like Ruins and Zeni Geva.

3 stars Confusion and harmony - in this track, the ambivalent atmospheric elements live together. This "Tunneli" was released precedently as a single cut of their upcoming album "Horros" in March 2023. Their second album "Hurmos" is so splendid enough for me to get immersed in Finnish post rock'scene again (e.g. Baulta, Horte, Kairon; IRSE!,, Kakaokamkami), and needless to say, this "Tunneli" keeps such a mystic, energetic atmosphere on. Mysteriously complicated but solemnly acceptable percussion sounds in the beginning, fantastic lingering chorus like a kaleidoscopic aurora in the Finnish cold air and black sky, repetitive psychic melody lines, and mindful vibes to demolish the current tough situation all over the world ... Every single essence is really fascinating. Dissonant guitar sounds are also powerful and grab our heart strictly. The musical structure of this song is quite simple and favourable but there is kinda strong intention and soul of three Virters deeply in it. Cannot wait for their upcoming album to be released maybe in the near future.

Atsuko Chiba Post Rock/Math rock

Review by TheEliteExtremophile

4 stars The 1980s produced a lot of very good music. I've got a soft spot for some synthpop, and I love genres like new wave and post-punk. However, that decade, particularly its latter half, was not especially kind to progressive rock. In the current musical landscape, though, both progressive rock and post-punk are on the cultural and creative upswing. Occasionally, there is the rare nexus of both those genres' revivals. Atsuko Chiba are one such nexus.

On Trace, their second full-length release, this Quebecois quintet lean into the dark, jagged rhythms of bands like Joy Division and Wire while mixing these influences with the complexity and technicality of math rock. Ample synthesizers, inventive melodies, and nonlinear song structures add to their prog bona fides.

"A Heretic of Arrogance", the album's opener, is full of dark and moody keys. The guitars alternatingly slash, anxiously slink along, and soar with the best that post-rock has to offer. This song almost feels as if it could be the backdrop for some grim sci-fi film with its tense atmosphere and gradual build.

The two-part "Pawn to King" is a study in musical contrasts. The first half glides along at a slow tempo, with  an echoed ambiance and dispirited lyrics. Part two, though, opens with irregular, high-energy guitars in a jumpy, stuttering rhythm. Around the midway point, it becomes a punky, buzzing hard-rocker. This pair of songs is a fantastic showcase for the band's skills as both songwriters and instrumentalists.

"Dry Ice" is another highlight, featuring a jazzy, funky feeling which almost reminds me of jam bands like Aqueous or Umphrey's McGee. The song closes on an extended instrumental section which includes descending guitar and synth lines, backed with a brass section. The clear standout from this album, though, is the closing "New Folds". It's the most consistently-aggressive song on the album, with some of its most overt punk influences, and the outro very effectively builds an eerie feeling.

Not everything on this album necessarily works.  The two shortest songs on the album, "Sometimes All You Need Is" and "Hold On", feel unnecessary. I can understand the ideas behind them ? palette cleansers before longer pieces ? but they meander unimpressively. "Captain Colair" has a decent second half, but it takes a long time to get going. Much of that first half (and some of the second) feels like an unimaginative retread of a lot of post-rock.

Traces is a strong album which manages to successfully blend the sounds of progressive rock and post-punk. Flashes of math rock, psychedelic rock, and post-rock show up here and there, and Atsuko Chiba's use of texture is quite skillful.

5 stars I was recommended this album by someone, and it did not disappoint. This album is genuinely the most beautiful thing I have ever heard, and most likely ever will hear. Even without real lyrics, I could sense a story in each of the songs. "Storm" felt like it was about helplessness and the feeling of hopelessness. The feeling that your life is happening around you, but you can't control its direction. "Static" felt like it was about panic; a drawn-out descent into hysteria. Although the religious bit kind of threw me off. "Sleep" felt like it was about nostalgia; a fleeting love for the past, the sorrow of it being gone, and a feeling of anger at its passing that turns to mindless rage that slowly morphs back into sorrow. As if the past was a pit and anger was their attempt at climbing out, only for them to fall back into sorrow. Every time the anger returns, it is another attempt at escape that fails. A cycle that they never escape from. As for the final song, "Like Antennas To Heaven...", I couldn't discern its meaning. It felt like there was so much meaning there, but it was something I was not yet ready to understand. This album is just amazing. You can't describe it accurately with words. I am still young, but if I die early I hope this album is played at my funeral.

3 stars What an impressive world by CRUSHING MY PALMS BETWEEN THE GLASS SHARDS YOU GAVE ME (aka CMPBTGSYGM).

Their latest album sounds veiled in an incredible dark collision of heavy post rock and dready electronika. Such an eccentric combination cannot be heard so easily and would be recognized as an innovative movement in another sense. The first shot "reducing the grain." tells you everything around the current CMPBTGSYGM, flooded with (con)fusion of electronic dissonance, guitar-oriented post-rock distortion, and beautiful tragic melody lines by the keyboard. This novel noble harmonization would remind you of a sort of similarity to a Japanese psychedelic feedback pioneer Les Rallizes D'nud's, dunno CMPBTGSYGM are following them though. And sounds partially like recent Ulver (at least for me). Quite unique but not unpleasant at all. You can be drenched in violent dissective sound cracks through the following track "individuals double-crossing or not, cry myself to sleep". Deep inorganic infernal soundquakes sound sarcastic but even lyrical and comfortable. For them to be simpler the soundscape is, to be better it may be. "to find a purpose in an ever absurd world" is also dry and withered, but melodic discharges in the middle phase are so elegant and essential enough to absorb you completely. Such a charming tip is one of their great viewpoints. After "waking up", a monotonous noisy interlude, "angels stuck in hell, forever is one of the flood." drives you into another crazy dimension. Magnificent sound dissonance gives you a wondrous impact. A mystic freeform sound / noise hotchpotch could really catch your inner mind strictly, regardless of kinda machinery monotone. Just like black water oozing through their sound cracks, this song will venomize you in an auditory manner.

Ha ha, a Finnish post rock mavericks CMPBTGSYGM have grown to be de...err...upgraded to another electronic noise champ.

4 stars What a big surprise. Finally an Argentine combo NADIE NUNCA NADA has released their second album titled "Atlánticos" on March 3, 2023. Their first album "Todas Las Líneas" is a fantastic one for me (and at the same time it's a pity for me they have been under hibernation for more than three years). Such a great news completely kicked me into raptures. A beautiful pic on the sleeve is also attractive. And of course, their creativity has gotten more and more refined and positive, even under such tough situations all over the world.

Look at the first shot title "La Rehumanización de la Vida", wonder what is 'rehumanization', and give it a listen. Delightful. Really delightful. No depressive impression is given for you. Their melody lines are quite enchanting. The rhythmic polarity by Membrives and Jorge is a bit complicated but smooth and silky. Simultaneously the soundscape especially in the middle part is deep, heavy, and magnificent like Malbec-based Argentine red wine. Sarra's keyboard plays are so brilliant and beautiful enough to excite you much. Clear blue sky-like delight from the beginning until the end is pretty amazing. The following "Goliadkin" is another powerful song, featuring strict repetitive phrases performed by two phantasmagoric guitars and sensitive keyboards. Difficult, aggressive but sincere drumming is also crazy good. This tightness would be rather heartwarming. On the contrary, "Hologramas" has kinda characteristic of calm, slowtempo, and broad-minded vibes. Kaleidoscopic melodic transition is mystic and joyful. Delicious keyboard sounds in the latter part stabilize your inner mind. You can find another mathy-psychedelic moment in "Cenizas Desde Temprano" that has sorta atmospheric texture different from other tracks especially in the former site and involves catchy fantasia in the latter. Such a conversion should be a love. "Antorcha" flavours serious and hard-touched. Sounds like Antorcha blazes so hard at first and is going out gradually. Slightly tragic. And what a dramatic epilogue "Del Litoral" is ... just like a complete compilation of NNN, all instruments shout and cry and get unificated in the final phrase.

Their positivity definitely gives you additional energy.

4 stars This project has been pulled together by David Joseph (guitar, piano, harmonium, seagull, kalimba, field recording) in an attempt to continue on the work started by Mark Hollis and even used some musicians who had played with Mark to get it right. David recorded all the demo tracks, and from there it was sent to different people to add their contributions, and the result is something which stays true to the Talk Talk ideal but is also taking it in new directions. It includes guitarist Robbie McIntosh (Paul McCartney, The Pretenders, John Mayer), drummer/percussionist Martin Ditcham (Chris Rea, The Waterboys, Nik Kershaw), bassist Simon Edwards (Michael Jackson, Billy Bragg, Fairground Attraction) who all took part in the sessions for 'Laughing Stock', while we also have pianist Lawrence Pendrous, and flautist/Clarinettist Andy Panayi who played on Mark's solo album. Engineer Phill Brown came out of retirement to be involved, as did Denis Blackham who mastered it, while it also includes contributions from Tim Renwick (Guitar ? Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Eric Clapton), Mike Smith (Sax ? Blur, Damon Albarn, Gorillaz), David Knopfler (Guitar ? Dire Straits founding member), Gary Alesbrook (Trumpet ? Noel Gallagher, Kasabian, Super Furry Animals) as well as parts from blues/roots legend, Eric Bibb, Dutch rising-star, Just, and ambient composer, Unknown Replica.

The list of those involved is shown on the rear of the booklet in alphabetical order, and David has put himself in there as opposed to placing himself above the others, and apart from the line saying it was written and produced by David one would not know this was a solo album with guests. Now, it is all very good having a list of famous names, but it all comes down to the music, and as is my way I played this long before I looked at the press release. Although I was sent the CD it was just piled next to my computer to be put onto a playlist, so I am literally now just looking at it for the first time. I had no idea that so many people were involved, nor that it was a project where most of the recording was undertaken separately (David says he often wasn't in the same country at the time, let alone the same studio), as there is a feeling of togetherness about this which is sublime. Talk Talk and Pink Floyd combine in something which is both post rock and progressive, yet also has strong links to ambient, with some delicious lead guitars over the top of the layers, often acoustic as well as electric. It is music which does not work well when being played in a loud environment as this is something which needs to be savoured with headphones as there is so much going on. However, although complex there is also an innate simplicity within this which makes it quite special.

Not every musician plays on every track, but the editing and mastering process must have been intense as this has a majesty and magic about it, such as the trumpet towards the end of "The Tree Of Life" which is just perfect. This album is one which will appear to those who wish to sit and really listen to music as in that respect this is wonderful, while fans of Talk Talk in particular will do well to seek this out.

3 stars Here we have the third single from TFATD's upcoming fourth album, 'News From The Invisible World', and again features vocals from bassist Kevin Feazey and a quite different style to what we have become used to over the last twelve years or so. While when they get going there is a phenomenally heavy bass, there are also plenty of keyboards and not enough guitars, and for the most part this is incredibly light with both vocals from Kevin and harmony vocals from guitarist Steve Cleaton. I once described their sound as "post rock, math rock, space, rock, prog and hard rock all thrown into a metallic melting pot", yet while post rock is still at the heart of what they are doing, they themselves describe this as "Faith No More, Tame Impala, Smashing Pumpkins, LCD Soundsystem, Flaming Lips, Gorillaz and MGMT" which one must agree does not tie in with my description of their earlier music.

I am all for bands progressing and changing and will reserve my overall judgement until I have had the opportunity to listen to the album, but this is not something I ever expected to hear from TFATD, although I am sure it will gain them a much wider commercial audience.

4 stars Such a swiftly windy uptempo post / math structure. Such a faithful, delightful texture. I'm glad to come across such a fascinating creation. This ep titled "Todas Las Líneas" was released as the only one opus by an Argentine combo NADIE NUNCA NADA. They are kinda enigmatic and mysterious project with very little information around us, but the sound bullets launched by them via this album are splendid, without any suspicion. Anyway they play pleasantly and friendly and speedy from the beginning until the end, and this melody and rhythm is of our great comfort.

The first track "Autómatas" features delicate psychedelic keyboard touches and complex but smooth, silky drumming. We the audience will get veiled in such a dreamy flavour. The latter phase is full of space-rock-ish dramatic navigations. Repetitive, highly potential guitar-based sound trajectories are bewitching really. Cool clean watery vibes are quite optimistic, appropriate for the current tough situation all over the world. "Todas Las Líneas" is slightly dissonant and melty but pretty persuasive and energetic. Deeply in the song are sincere, tranquil charms like a powerful magnet. The final part has utterly translunary psychedelia to excite us gradually. "Saeta" is mystically passionate with charming synthesizer-oriented brass-y sounds. Jorge and Mariano's rhythmic patterns full of passion are crazy immersive. The epilogue "Últimas Imágenes Del Océano" is the longest song in this album but a supra-tense complicated sound kaleidoscope completely catches our heart. The last fragile piano plays are somewhat tragic ...

At any rate, it's a shame they are under hibernation currently. Wondering if their intention would have been too higher than expected.

4 stars I love Finnish Post Rock Scene really. Horte, Kairon; IRSE!, CMPbtGSYGM, Kakaokamkami, or Virta ... every single project is brilliant. And another fantastic combo named BAULTA have been added to my favourite collection. They've been active for 15 years around North or East Europe, and finally released their fourth full-length album titled "Another Second Chance" in the spring of 2021 via independent labels like Dunk! Records or A Thousand Arms. You will be addicted to such a fragile, mysterious sleeve pic maybe featuring love and peace (under such a tough situation around Finland, I guess). Their soundscape suggested through the sleeve should be well appeared and infiltrated for you e.g. in the third deep, heavy, and energetic track "My Golden Cage", where they would desperately try to kick out a narrow, dyspnoeic obstruction feeling. At the beginning, calm sincere piano plays are of comfort indeed. And simple, monotonous but powerful and aggressive phrases recover and uplift you.

On the other hand you will be driven to do something important in your future "While The World Sleeps". That says everyone should think and go into action regardless of the current deadlock circumstance. The following "Hardly Even Here" (one of my favourite songs in this creation) you can enjoy beautiful and gorgeous psychedelia. Tranquil, quiet, and delightful combination of dissonant guitar-based atmosphere and brilliant keyboard-oriented passion relieve and stabilize your inner mind. The epilogue "Long May Reign" is another terrific stuff full of magnificence and enthusiasm launched via their impressive instrumental delivery. Downtempo shoegaze-y sound expressions cannot discourage you but give a large amount of nutritious supplement. They would say people all over the world are suffering but keep holding dreams and hopes eternally.

Do not forget the first shot "Third" that should encourage and activate you carefully. Delicate keyboard playing based upon guitar distortion is fascinating. You can get immersed in their flowery, flavourful, aromatic sound unification. Actually I consider this excellent work would be appropriate both for the prologue and for the epilogue. Ultimate energy from Finland.

Review by WJA-K

2 stars Many might rate it higher than I do. I found this album rather boring.

Sunbath is a slow start to the album. Moody and a bit dragging. Luckily, the speed picks up a bit beyond halfway. But this last a minute or so. 7/10

So much for is another slow track but with a bit more dynamics this time. But it doesn't impress me that much. 7/10

Shook (I'm often) again is a bit dragging for my taste. Nothing really special happens here for me 6.5/10

Seeds is not for my taste. It is too uneventful. Some may like this. I have other interests. 6.5/10

Link is the most vicious and therefore interesting track. But it is also by far the shortest 7.5/10

Water, It feels like it's growing drags on a bit too long for my taste. It is pleasant enough, but never does it touch me. It reminds me of the much greater work of 50 years ago. 7/10

This is an OK album, not nothing really special. 2 stars.
